1.) New metal tabs
In the second picture above you`ll see a metal tab at the center of the plate just below the "U" shape.  These tabs used to be plastic and frequently broke.  The new 2009 models are 3 times stronger then the older models. (We know this because we used to sell the older version and the plates constantly had problems breaking and needed to be replaced)
2.) New aerodynamic handles
The new aerodynamic handles are designed to provide a smoother lifting experience.  The older models were less aerodynamic and forced your wrists to move unnaturaly when lifting causing discomfort.   The new handles work seamlessly with your lifting motion and feel 100% natural.
3.) New enhanced plate technology
If you`ve ever used an older model of selecttech dumbbell you`d know why this is so critical. Quite often when re-engaging the dumbbell back into the base the plates would not interlock smoothly.  You may have to fidget around for 3-5 seconds just getting the plate to drop back into the proper position.  With the new 2009 model this is no longer an issue.  The new plate technology ensures that the plates go back into the base smoothly each time.
